With the passing two years ago of veteran butterfly observer Dick Smith, we no longer have access to his notekeeping files or his far-flung list of contributing observers to update his database of county records for Maryland butterflies (MD being LepLog’s home base). We still want to track new records for Maryland, so with the help of the Maryland Biodiversity Project (MBP) we encouraged all of our local butterfliers to submit their observations (with our without photos) to MBP going forward. The butterfly records at MBP now incorporate the final version of Dick’s “Butterflies of Unknown Occurence” data that he and I posted annually at LepLog for many years.
Administrators Bill Hubick and Jim Brighton have been terrifically helpful in coaxing their database to spit out all the new county records submitted in 2017 — a week’s long process in the old days! And — drumroll please — they’ve also compiled a companion list of all new moth records for 2017 that I’ll be posting soon as well.
MBP has become the most important local (and even regional) resource for understanding the distribution and status of Maryland’s butterflies. Our community owes a great deal of gratitude to Bill and Jim.
And of course we owe them our records for 2018!!!
And now for the new records. Congratulations to all the contributors! The species ID link takes you to the species record in MBP.
