New Annual Counts Added to the Master 2012 Regional Calendar

Five new counts — Holtwood and Furnace Hills, PA; Bath, VA; Great Dismal Swamp, VA; and Island Ford, VA — have been added today to the master calendar for the mid-Atlantic/Central Appalachian region.  Check out all the 2012 counts and other field activities that have been shared with LepLog so far.

      Unusual, but not unprecedented. All the Vanessa species are prone to irruptions and mass migrations; this one is just very early and very evident. The relatively warm winter may have something to do with it, in that the leps may have emerged early in response to warmth but the host plants hadn’t emerged sufficiently yet, which spawned a mass out-migration. Or at least that’s one theory … why that would urge them northward is another question.
