Romania Barcodes Its Butterflies

Proceedings of the Royal Society, Dec. 22

The Dec. 22 issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B:  Biological Sciences reports that Romania has developed DNA barcodes for all of its 180 butterfly species (about a third of the European butterfly fauna), and that barcode ID’s work well for about 90 percent of the species (not so well for closely related species pairs).  In fact, the DNA barcodes outperform external morphology and genitalic examination for all but these difficult species complexes.  Read the article (subscription required),
