Maryland Big Year Butterfly #1 — Cabbage White!

Until today, had yet to see my FOY butterfly.  Last weekend, when it       seemed EVERYTHING was flying, I was battling sleet and snow in Nebraska to see the incredible staging of hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes on the Platte River.  Yesterday, with temps in the 70s and beautiful sunshine, I was sure I could pick up a half-dozen species — but I was trapped in the office at work.

Today, was able to pop home for lunch to College Park MD in between meetings at the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center and … a cabbage white zipped through the yard, the official first species in my 2010 Maryland Butterfly Big Year.

Quite a relief!
