2010 FOY Butterfly — Mourning Cloak

But alas, not in MarylanSan Elijo Lagoon Nature Reserved to kick off the Butterfly Big year but in (mostly) sunny San Diego, where I’ve been attending the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  Had a field trip yesterday to the nearby San Elijo Lagoon Nature Reserve, hosted by Solana Beach resident, San Elijo Nature Conservancy docent, and editor of the professional magazine ScienceWriters Lynne Friedmann to view some of the local shorebirds and review some of the land use and runoff issues from this area, which once was bounded by flower fields and vegetable production.  Had hopes for some early whites or sulphurs, but picked up instead the year’s first butterfly for me, a rather fresh mourning cloak.
